About the temple: Sthalapurana - Legend says that Lord Narasimha in Attigiri cave, took another form of Narasimha to protect his devotees from asuras. HE drove the asuras away from this place and then HE wished to stay in this place as Yoga Narasimha to always protect HIS devotees from evil. 'VeL' in Tamil is King and other meaning is wish and 'Irukkai' in Tamil is stay. Lord Narasimha (Kamasika Narasimhan), the Lion King resided at this place happily on his own wish and hence the name VeLirukkai, and later it became VeLukkai.
There are separate sannidhis for Garudan, Amirthavalli Thayar, Andal, Azhwars and Acharyas.
Swami Desikan has sung a poem on this Perumal known as "Kamasikaashtakam". In that stotram, he explains about Lord Narasimha's wish to stay in this Kshetra. Kamaasika means standing on His own wish.
